From Equestrian Sport to the Frontline – The Aachen Border Region as a Theatre of War in 1944

Rundgang vhs unterwegs

In September and October 1944, the border forest west of Aachen became a scene of heavy fighting during the Second World War. The so‑called Westwall, regarded as a protective fortification, ran through this area, where German and American troops dug into the ground for cover. To this day, visible traces remain—massive defensive structures as well as hastily built trenches and foxholes.
On the occasion of the 2026 World Equestrian Championships in Aachen, author and journalist Alexander Barth looks back at the CHIO of 1939—then the world’s largest equestrian event and at the same time an important propaganda instrument of the Nazi regime, held only days before the outbreak of the Second World War.
